Brussels thinks you're a lazy shopper.

Since 1 July, every cheap parcel an online seller sends you from outside the EU pays €3 for each type of item inside. In November Brussels adds €2 more. Some countries stack their own fee on top of that. Ursula is not having it.

EU duty €3 per item type, 1 July 2026 to 1 July 2028 · EU handling fee €2 per product group, expected from 1 November 2026 · Romania 25 lei per parcel · Italy €2 per parcel from 1 December 2026 · France €2 per product type, suspended since 1 July 2026

Ursula sitting on a huge EU rulebook, reading the small print through a magnifying glass with a smug grin.

Ursula read the small print.

The €3 only applies to distance sales. By the EU's own definition, that means goods

“dispatched or transported to the customer by or on behalf of the supplier.”

Buy in China, get it delivered in China, ship it home yourself. The seller never sends anything to you, so it's not a distance sale.
